MID Approved Meters for Marinas
Are your meters legal?
Not all marina electricity and gas meters are legally approved for prepayment and billing.
If your pedestals use non-certified meters, you could be at risk of breaching UK regulations, and potentially invalidating the charges you issue to berth holders.
Many marinas don’t realise that some meters may not, or may no longer, meet the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) standard. That means they aren’t legally valid for energy resale, even if they still appear to work normally.
If you resell electricity and gas, your meters must be MID-approved. It’s that simple.
Using non-approved meters can lead to:
- Billing disputes or non-payment from berth holders
- Compliance issues with MID regulations
- Reputational damage for your marina
What is the Measuring Instruments Directive (MID)?
The Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) ensures a single, consistent standard for meters, protecting both marina operators and berth holders.
MID sets out the legal requirements for gas and electricity meters used in billing across the UK and Europe. It ensures meters are accurate, tested, and certified for financial transactions, such as energy resale in marinas.
How do you know if your meter is MID approved?
MID-approved meters are independently verified and carry the following markings:
- CE marking
- The MID marking, letter “M”, followed by the year of manufacture (e.g. M21)
- Four-digit code identifying the approving body
If a meter doesn’t have these markings, it’s not MID approved and can’t be used for billing consumers.
What does this mean for marina operators?
✓ You must use MID-approved meters for any berth where electricity or gas is recharged to customers.
✓ Non-approved meters should be replaced to maintain compliance and accuracy.
Speak to an ExpertA Brief History of the Legislation
For many years, gas and electricity meters in the UK only needed to be of a type approved by Ofgem, meeting the requirements set out in the Gas Act 1986 and the Electricity Act 1989.
In October 2006, the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2004/22/EC came into effect, harmonising the requirements for 10 different types of measuring instruments, including gas and active electricity meters. The aim was to ensure uniformity, accuracy, and reliability across all EU member states.
The directive was updated in 2016 with the “recast” MID (2014/32/EU), implemented in the UK via the Measuring Instruments Regulations SI 2016/1153.
